Government to Mandate IMEI Registration to Curb Illegal Mobile Imports in Nepal

Last Updated on by ICT Byte

In a significant move to control the illegal import and use of mobile phones in Nepal, the government has announced that IMEI registration will be made mandatory for all mobile handsets.

During the announcement of the Fiscal Year 2082/83 national budget, Finance Minister Bishnu Poudel stated that mandatory IMEI registration is aimed at curbing the unauthorized import and circulation of mobile devices across the country.

Alongside this initiative, the government has also laid out a series of reforms to boost Nepal’s digital infrastructure and connectivity. The Nepal Telecommunications Authority (NTA) will undergo restructuring, and the digital divide will be minimized by expanding access to Information and Communication Technology (ICT) services nationwide.

Finance Minister Poudel also shared the government’s commitment to expanding broadband internet coverage, enhancing the quality of 4G services, and introducing 5G technology in major urban areas, including the Kathmandu Valley.

“4G service will be expanded and upgraded across the country, while 5G service will be launched in Kathmandu Valley and other major cities,” said Minister Poudel during the budget speech.

These efforts reflect Nepal’s ongoing drive towards digital transformation and a more inclusive digital economy.
