Visa Cardholders Can Now Pay via FonePay QR in Nepal

International tourists using Visa cards can now make payments by scanning FonePay QR codes. Visa, in collaboration with FonePay, has launched the ‘Scan to Pay’ feature, enabling seamless digital transactions for foreign visitors in Nepal.

This partnership aims to make cross-border payments in Nepal secure, convenient, and hassle-free for international travelers using Visa cards. With this Scan to Pay feature, tourists can make Visa card payments at over 1.5 million QR-enabled businesses across Nepal, enhancing their shopping experience.

How It Works

If international tourists have a tokenized Visa card linked to their preferred digital wallet, they can simply scan a FonePay QR code in Nepal and complete their payment effortlessly.

Statements from Industry Leaders

Sabbir Ahmed, Visa’s Country Manager for Nepal, Bangladesh, and Bhutan, expressed his excitement about the partnership, stating:

“We are delighted to collaborate with FonePay to enable consumers and tourists in Nepal to scan and pay digitally using Visa cards, anywhere they go.”

Similarly, Dibyas Sapkota, CEO of FonePay, highlighted the significance of this collaboration, saying:

“This partnership is a major step in expanding FonePay’s QR-based system as a preferred cross-border payment solution in Nepal.”

Impact on Nepal’s Digital Payment Ecosystem

Visa’s global network, combined with FonePay’s robust payment infrastructure, will make cross-border transactions more accessible and convenient, accelerating the adoption of digital payments in Nepal.

QR code payments, one of the most popular digital payment methods in Nepal and Asia, will enhance transaction speed, promote cashless payments, and ensure secure digital transactions across millions of merchant outlets in Nepal.

Benefits for Businesses

  • Small businesses without POS machines can now accept card payments easily.
  • Large retailers can provide faster and more convenient payment options while reducing fraud risks.

Visa has been actively working with banks and partners to increase the adoption of digital payments in Nepal. This collaboration with FonePay marks a historic step in Visa’s mission to drive digital financial inclusion in the country, setting a new milestone for the future of digital payments in Nepal.
