On September 7, at the Apple Event, a very interesting feature of the new iPhone 14 was announced. Apple announced the removal of SIM Trays starting from iPhone 14! Instead, they have introduced the use of eSIM technology, which uses software instead of a physical card to store mobile user data. While eSIM support isn’t a new move for high-end phones, the removal of SIM slot altogether is a big change.
But, one red flag regarding this announcement is that the e-SIM technology will only be prevalent in the US while all other countries will have iPhones with a physical SIM slot. eSIM is a very simple concept. Instead of the SIM card slot determining which phone carrier you’re using, your phone uses software to do the same. There are many benefits to using an eSIM, but remember that your carrier must offer it as an option for you to use. The good news for US customers is that most US phone companies offer eSIM cards, from T-Mobile and Verizon to affordable options like Mint Mobile.
Apple has provided eSIM support since the release of the iPhone XS, XS Max, and XR in 2018. In fact, the iPhone 13 also introduced the ability to have multiple eSIMs on a single phone. Now Apple allows you to have eight or more electronic SIM cards and use two phone numbers at the same time.
Removal of SIM slot- eSIM on iPhone 14
Setting up an eSIM is very easy. First, you’ll need to get an eSIM card in one of four ways: set up a carrier plan, scan a QR code, use your carrier’s iOS app, or use Apple’s eSIM Fast Transfer, a new feature in iOS 16, that launched on September 12.
All these four methods are very simple. To create a transportation plan, your wireless carrier sends a push notification to your iPhone. Tap this notification and your iPhone will open Settings and guide you through the process.
Using a QR code is similar. Scan the QR code and a push notification will appear. After that, the process is the same.
Using the mobile phone operator app is a bit more complicated, but that’s about it. You need to install the carrier app on your phone, then open the app and log in. You will then find instructions on how to add a SIM card to this program. At this point, the carrier app should automatically open the settings and then guide you through the process. However, each carrier determines how its program works, so we cannot guarantee how smooth or bumpy it will be.
Finally, iOS 16 has a new eSIM configuration option called eSIM Quick Transfer. This will allow you to transfer your existing SIM card (physical or electronic SIM card) from your old iPhone to your new iPhone as an eSIM. The only problem is that both phones must be running iOS 16 or it won’t work. But for many people, this is the easiest way to change SIM cards when upgrading their phones.
