DoTM, the Department of Transport Management started distributing Smart License since the last of 2015, almost 5 years back. These digital smart licenses incorporate electronic chips that contain information about the driver’s identity somewhat similar to SIM cards.

And similar to the previous traditional types of licenses, the procedure to acquire the license is similar till date. Initially, you have to pass a written test then you will have to pass a trial exam.

How can I apply online for driving License in Nepal?

  • To fill up the online form, Visit the official DOTM website. Have patience if the website takes a long time or shows error. Because most of the time the server is down due to lots of traffic at the same time.

  • Click on the new Registration Form on the website.
  • Fill up the online form with all the details; here * means compulsory fields and other fields are optional.
  • Submit that form after the completion.
  • [Note: Fill the Visit location or address of the DoTM office according to your nearest location.]
  • Now, you need to save and print the confirmation page to take it to the DoTM office for further process.
  • Visit the DoTM office as mentioned on the date on the confirmation page.

Documents required to issue a new driving License in Nepal

  • Photocopy of the online registered form
  • National identity card (citizenship
  • Blood group Card/report[Verified by registered medical]
  • 10Rs Sticker
  • Rs.500 for the written exam fee.

What are the procedures to apply for a new license in the DoTM office?

  • Visit the office on your mentioned date.
  • You will further need to complete the biometric process and medical check-up at the DoTM office.
  • The biometric process means verification of your personal details of your online form according to registered official documents that can be your citizenship. And in addition to that, they will take your digital photo with a webcam, and signature.
  • Next, you need to visit another room for the medical checkup.[Dont forget to take the blood group report with you.]

  • Lastly, you will have to pay a fee Rs. 500 to give a written test.

How can I check the license result online in Nepal?

The DoTM has issued a new online system to inform the people about the results of their driving license test. They also provide information about smart card print status through the SMS.

It has been a relief for many people especially those who have no time to visit the office to check their license status.

With the online system, you can know about the written test result and the print status of your smart license. You can simply do it through an SMS to 33001 which costs you Rs.5

To check results for written tests, you have to simply,

  • Open your message box on your mobile.
  • Type ‘WT [Application ID number]’ and Send it to 33001.
  • After sometimes you will receive an SMS with the results of the Written Test Exam.

To check smart driving license print status, you have to simply,

  • Open your message box on your mobile.
  • Type ‘LC [Application ID Number]’ and Send it to 33001.
  • After sometimes you will receive an SMS with the print status of your smart card license.

How to know if my Smart License is printed after this lockdown?

As per the official notice by DoTM published in 1st of Ashad , only the license number upto the application number 01-06-00622000 has been printed. Other smart licenses are still in the process for printing and you have to wait for the next notice.

How long does it take to print and get a Driving License?

Usually, it takes more than five-month to get it delivered. Printing is done in a separate office and the time is taken for processing and printed according to the queue. You can check online to know the status of your license through SMS.

How to change the license category??

OOPS, I feels so sad for you.But,Sorry you cannot edit the submitted online form. You need to submit the online form once again with right category only after 15 days.Or, You need to visit the DoTM office.

What are the required documents to renew a license?

-An expired driving license. If it has been expired for more than 3 months expect fines.
-2 Passport and 1 Auto-Size photograph. The recommended dimension for the small photograph is 2 cm * 2 cm.

Have patience if the website takes a long time or shows error. Because most of the time the server is down due to lots of traffic at the same time. Visit the website later.[I suggest you visit the site before 10 am early in the morning.

How can I upgrade my license online?

-Visit the DoTM that issued your driving license and ask for a form to upgrade your license.
-Fill up the form and submit the documents required such as existing Driving License, address proof, and any other documents required.

How do I change my photo on my driving Licence?

To change it, just go to the DoTM office location or the branch office and request an update to your license. You may need to pay the fee for an update to a driver’s license.

What is the total cost to get a new Driving License in Nepal?

Rs.500 for the exam fee.
Rs.50 approx for a blood test.
Rs.250 bike charge in the trial and for the car Rs. 500
Rs.1500 to be paid after you pass all exams [For new Licence].

Obviously, you need to carry that payment slip along with your citizenship to prove that you have passed your driving license trial.

In case, you fail in the written exam, you have to reapply with the online procedure once again after 3 months.

What to do if I fail my license trial exam?

If you fail the license trial exam once you can still give two more chances of trial after 2 weeks. But if you fail for the third time too, you need to re-exam all the process again. That means online form full up, written exam ans lastly trial too.

How can I renew my driving License in Nepal?

You have to follow these procedures to renew your license;

  • Visit the nearest DoTM office in your location to renew your license.
  • Initially get a driver license renewal slip that costs you Rs.38 in the office.
  • Then, attach your expired driver’s license to that slip.
  • Now you need to get another slip with a token number. For that, you need to visit the concerned room number in the same office to verify your records and get a printed form with all your personal details.
  • Visit another room number and wait for your turn according to the token number. They’ll verify your name, ask you for your mobile number and also take your picture with a webcam, take your bio-metrics, and your digital signature.
  • Next, you will have to approach the Medical test boot for color blindness and physical fitness report.
  • Now you need to pay a license fee which depends upon the license that you are renewing.
  • Now with all these documents go to the final room for verification of the document and pay the fee.
  • After the fee payment, you will be provided with a printed form, a pink slip, and a green slip, where you have to check whether all your information presented in the form is correct.
  • The process is finished. Keep the voucher safe and you can check the status online to know whether your license is ready or not.
